After months of worldwide speculation and selling our souls to sinister devil workers, Issue #001 finally landed across the Northern Beaches in the summer of 2007/2008. Phil Harkness’ crafty artwork decorated our pages and his timeless pencil sketchings captured exactly what we had in mind for our inaugural cover. We shot a couple of skate kids doing work around the Peninsula and interviewed Mercy Arms bass slapper, Ash Moss, just before the band released their debut EP. We awkwardly hauled a Hills Hoist around the streets to shoot fashion label Kornerd’s summer collection and infiltrated Toby Player’s dope harbour-view apartment to steal the highlights from his underrated photography collection. We directly asked WCT rookie Kai Otton if he had any STDs and gave you Part One of a blatantly honest interview we did with a friend who accidentally smuggled drugs into Asia.

skate – rollerdeck riding

Skate - Rollerdeck Riding You’re invited on a skate adventure with dynamic duo Jared and Wadey.
Grapevine took these two young, local skate on a mission with the intention of a few covers! One tank of petty, one carton of beer, some triple cheeseburgers and a couple of sketchy fence jumps later, we had our photos.

bodyboard – toby player

Bodyboard - Toby Player Avalon’s Toby Player has been amongst the forefront of Australia’s new generation bodyboarders for most of his life. When he isn’t in the water ripping undies or meeting the demands of running his own booger website, Toby releases his inner creative through spinning records in his top floor harbour view apartment or shooting photos of the world he has travelled more time than one cares to fathom.

feature – alone, hungry and locked in a cell

Feature - alone, hungry and locked in a cell Our mate RA is a hard working, hard partying dude. He had planned a trip to Japan and China and worked towards the adventure for a full year. He left for his six week long holiday as scheduled wearing his trademark cheeky grin with boards and bags in hand, and then four days later he turned up at my pad. He was skinny, pale and had obviously undergone some sort of ordeal. ‘What the shit are you doing here?’, I inquired, ‘You’re s’posed to be in Asia.’ He looked at me sadly and said; ‘Dude, it’s a long story, sit down and I’ll tell you.’

fashion – kornerd

fashion - kornerd As far as mens streetwear goes, Kornerd has it dialled. The collection characteristically blends bold imagery with a strong use of colour and this season’s range is no exception. With typically over-sized, loose fitting tees and hoodies featuring a sharp graphic style combined with a series of high quality skinny and crumpled jeans; It is crystal clear why Kornerd us soaring to the top of the Australian urban fashion ranks.

surf – kai otton

surf - kai otton In conjunction with our ‘first time’ whoring together Grapevine, we asked rookie WCT surfer and recent Manly inhabitant Kia Otton, some questions about his ‘first time’…

music – mercy arms

music - mercy arms With so many up-and-coming bands around these days all with really great haircuts and excellent fashion-sense it can at times get a little overwhelming trying to decipher exactly which bands we dig solely for their music and those we dig for maybe more superficial reasons. Mercy Arms, however, demand our attention and respect purely for their musicianship. Having toured the country with one of the biggest bands of the 2000’s and with an EP now out in the stores, find out why Mercy Arms are the real deal.

random – revenge on an inanimate object

random - revenge on an inanimate object Venting rage and anger on technology has never been so fun. I had a love/hate relationship with my ipod. At first it provided me with hours of aural pleasures. Sweet, soothing sounds would spew forth from its metallic moving-part free body, travelling through my oversized and sometimes embarrassing earphones straight into my listening pits for days at a time…
