To facilitate Grapevine’s ascendancy, and our consequential drug habits, we moved out of our shitty bedrooms and into a swanky art gallery/office space complete with built in mini ramp. Creative maestro Daniel Watkins featured as the artist, creating arguably the most interesting magazine cover your ever likely to see, and we shot the crew shredding the mini into millions of pieces in what was the first of many all-night sessions. We chewed the fat with super-freak DJ/producer fRew and asked young Northy surfer Dave Vlug what his favourite sexual position is. We showcased the latest clothing line from Spacejunk (Manly) and interviewed our friend who experienced the full effects of altitude sickness while illegally smuggling himself into Tibet. We managed to get our hands on photos of boogers Brenden Newton and Troy Hanepen charging ridiculous Shipsterns and, because it’s the winter ish, we caught up with snowboard phenom-kid Nate Johnston as he began training for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

snow – nate johnstone

snow - nate johnstone In my eyes, this 18-year-old snowboard kid from Mona Vale doesn’t get the recognition he deserves along the sandy stretch of beaches he calls home. As a potential Olympian, his talent warrants house-hold name status, and girls should be flocking to the discos on a Friday night to hunt him down. Put simply: he is very, very good at what he does, and is considered by those in the know as the best halfpipe rider in the country. Say Hello to the Australian Junior Athlete and Snowboarder of the Year, Nate Johnstone.

surf – dave vlug

surf - dave vlug Emerging as one of the shining lights from the star-studded North Narrabeen line-up, Dave Vlug is turning heads with his smooth style and absurd ability to bust full rotation frontside and backside flips. Eager to find out more about this young goofy-footer, we fired off a barrage of improvised prompts for him to unravel.

bodyboarding – brendo and hanny

bodyboarding - brendo and hanny It’s become a kind of ritual for me and Brendo now, we’ve been going down once a year/twice a year since Brendo got those first shots run like six years ago. We’ve been pumped on the plane ever since. I got my plane ticket, jumped on the L90 and got the flight with mates to pick me up at the other end. This trip, this swell, we just really lucked into a good one.

music – fRew

music - fRew The most exciting thing in relation to electronic music is the fact that it’s still a very new form of music, completely open to interpretation. And being an infant in the musical scheme of things, Dance Music has all the room to move in the world. People are grabbing it by the face, manipulating and twisting its nipple. And these individuals, who are at the very forefront of contemporary music, are producing sounds unlike anything that has ever been heard or existed. One dude who is riding the hedonistic electronic wave of future noise is DJ, Northern Beaches resident and producer extraordinaire, fRew.

skate – fruits of their labour

skate - fruits of their labour Do you have a perfect mini ramp running underneath your office space? We do. It’s awesome. And distracting. But mainly awesome. Here are some photos of Concrete Crayons Gallery co-owner Trav, and OG gnar-master Shorty, shredding the Concrete Crayons wooden wonder in the first of many sessions.
