In honour of Grapevine celebrating its first birthday, we pieced together the biggest and baddest motherfuckering ish to date! Carly Casey’s incredible artwork of beautiful, half-naked women popped deliciously from our pages and no doubt struck a chord with our 15-year-old male audience. Our good friends at Insight designed an inspired fashion spread exclusively for us and we joined booger world champ Ben Player on a South Coast mission to score green rooms and examine the finer points of the sport. We interviewed a friend who was held at gun point stumbling through Hyde Park one drunken evening and chewed the fat with pro skater and TV sensation, Corbin Harris. We conducted a psychological evaluation of Narrabeen shredder Nathan Webster by making him interpret a bunch of ink blots and even found the time to catch up with Newport’s Angus and Julia Stone as the brother/sister duo were busy taking their folksy music to the far ends of the world.

“I think the human tendency to watch, and study, is most amplified in women and girls. We are the ultimate voyeurs and the ultimate watchers of members of our sex. And I guess my art is a study of that. I think women are beautiful and fascinating creatures – with all of their gestures and nuances whether they be subtle or in your face. And let’s face it – girls on canvas are way hotter than boys on canvas!” – carly casey |

Nathan Webster. Noodles. Narrabeen. Shredding surfie.. RVCA. We get inside his beard face and psyche by asking him to interpret some inkblots. Then follow with the obligatory questions. |

For the past few months, Newport’s Angus and Julia Stone have been busy taking their folksy music to the far ends of the universe like campaigning presidential candidates, earning critical acclaim along the way. With four ARIA nominations under their belts, and their debut album A Book Like This reaching platinum sales in this Vegemite-loving nation of ours, the brother and sister duo can now put their feet up and reflect on a incredibly successful 2008. We were fortunate enough to catch up with Julia as the road-weary band clocked up the miles, trekking through California on their recent US tour. Bless her cotton socks. |
bodyboarding – ben player

Ben Player, man of many talents, has a fist in a few different pies, all of which he owns or part owns. Owner of Movement Magazine, the boogers (and most of the surfers who can actually surf) out there who read this rag all know it’s at the fore front of the bodyboarding world. Part owner of Grand Flavour, a clothing label specifically targeting the bodyboard demographic, but equally loved by those outside the boogering world. |

Grapevine: So where is Australia’s hardest working skateboarder at the moment? Corbin: (laughs) That’s what I’m called, am I? G: That’s what I’m calling you. C: He has just arrived back from Melbourne. I’m actually in the south of Sydney at the moment. G: You been touring down in Melbourne? C: I’ve been there shooting photos for an interview I’ve been working on, down in Melbourne, and then I was hanging out with the Nike team down there. A few of the guys were in a street contest so we were hanging out, supporting them. |

We’re breaking tradition this issue and printing a story that didn’t occur overseas, but right here in Sydney City. It’s reassuring to know you don’t have to travel to Japan with drugs on your person, smuggle yourself through foreign borders or become estranged in Costa Rica to obtain a perilous and entertaining story to regale your friends (or a magazine) with. Just walk through Hyde Park in the wee hours of the morn, and you too might come away with fodder for this feature. You too could be the victim of gun violence! |
