about this issue
Six issues deep means it’s the autumn of 2009, and even though we thought this thing would have gotten us laid more, we’re still dedicated to providing the Northern Beaches with high-quality, free street press. Dan Raymond’s architecturally-bent artwork created around his use of subtle colours and muted tones adorned our pages as skilfully as Osama bin Laden hides in caves. Best cover yet? We fired off a barrage of thought-provoking questions for underground charger Dom Wills to unravel and checked out the latest range from on the rise fashion label, The Cassette Society. We shot a shit-hot skate sess with some of the Peninsula’s best young shredders and interviewed photographer Ben Cregan to discover more about his horrifying surfing accident that left him clinging to life at Mexico’s most infamous wave. We profiled booger photographer Lee Kelly and performed a legitimate psychological exam on Modular sweethearts Van She simply to found out why so many people want to fuck them.

As a young bloke I never saw myself becoming an architect – I was into the surf and the whole Northern Beaches lifestyle, it wasn’t until my last year of school that I thought about architecture. I was always stoked that I could get whatever I was envisioning down on paper.. |

surf – damien wills

bodyboard – lee kelly

‘I started off shooting video of my friends bodybording around Tamarama in Sydney. When their riding really developed, and sponsorship came along, there was a need for stills for the mags, so I bought a little Canon rig. My first time shooting water with Ben Player, I nailed a Morey Boogie and Quiksilver ad. I thought I’d be making millions. Turns out this stuff is quite hard, and it was years before I got it all sussed. |

feature – paralysed in peurto
 |
Photographer Ben Cregan is a living miracle. In the summer of 2006, while surfing on the Mexican Pacific coast, he suffered a severe spinal injury which caused him to be paralysed from the neck down. With only a scarce number of people in the water, and specialist care over 1000 kilometres away, his chances of survival seemed slimmer than Carefree’s newest range of tampons.
Grapevine recently caught up with Ben to discover more about his horrifying surfing accident that left him submerged underwater and desperately clinging to life at Mexico’s most infamous wave. |

fashion – the cassette society
 |
Grapevine appreciates the youth pursuing their chosen creative endeavours; we know how difficult a road it can be to traverse. We also really appreciate it when the endeavour includes making people look palatable, particularly when done in the most steezy of ways. The Cassette Society is okay with us. |
